Fortified For Faithfulness

(Poem by Knucklas Castle Poet, Tony Walton)
Written for the launch of the Knucklas Castle Community Land Project

On the green-mantled hill, no stone still stands
of this lonely Border outpost: at most
turfed stumps and scattered broken teeth.
Time has swallowed Knucklas Castle.
Mortimer’s lands are in our hands
now, and for long generations
yet to come, if we can safe-keep places
such as this, sacred spaces, to leave them.

Go back a thousand years and more before
a baron’s garrison kept watch into
encroaching hills, in alternating
boredom and high anxiety;
go back to when protection was
mostly for a good life lived well;
and tell me that we cannot recapture
communality and simple rapture.

Go back further still: a thousand years more,
to when this was a place of pilgrimage
and holy high observation
of spiritual priorities
that guarded us and guided us
along our proper path of life:
long time before the times of want and strife;
when this hill with Wisdom provided us
and nothing from the Truth divided us.

Tony Walton

King Arthur book

A wonderful new book has been written by one of our members for youngsters to enjoy the legend of King Arthur. Look on the Shop page to see details and purchase.

Castle hill

A new view of the castle using LiDR technology has become available, look here: LiDR survey
Many thanks to Mark Walters for this new view.

It raises some interesting questions about the way the castle has been used over the many years of its existence.

We are also on the Welsh governments catalogue of heritage buildings here Coflein

Knucklas information

Knucklas has a village web site - see what is going on in the area at Knucklas and at Knucklas Community Centre Transport information is also on the village web site.

Site & location

The 21 acre site, including a Cadw scheduled monument, has been bought by some philanthropic locals who are leasing it to KCCLP whilst the money is raised to purchase the site for the whole community.

Surrounding Area

Sited at the confluence of the Teme and Heyope valleys in Radnorshire, Knucklas Castle overlooks Shropshire's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Offa's Dyke and the River Teme, the border between Wales and England. This part of Wales has many delights to discover.
